Can you really take Gods name in vain?

God is what he is, not his name. I do not go around calling everyone human, if so I would think it would get confusing. so when people say oh my God or God damnit are they really using his name in vain? Gods name something suppost to be unspoken? maybe thats where this comandment came from?
