Growing up in TN I found countless Box Turtles, but recently I see nothing but painted turtles. Whats up?

I've heard these are from pet store turtles released and then established themselves, is that true? As a kid (in the 70's and 80's) I absolutely NEVER saw anything but boxers and snappers, now I only see painted (or maybe they are sliders...not sure). WHY???
