Please edit my story in correct English???

A long time ago, there was a happy family in a remote village. The eldest son graduated from college and joined the police force as an officer. At first he received only one star. A couple of years later he got promoted to the rank of lieutenant and received another star. A couple of years after that, he became a captain and received three stars. While he was captain, he went to his village to see his parents. His parents were very glad to see him with all the stars his shoulders. Some years later he became a major and went to see his parents again. His parents, thinking that he would have four stars, thought that he had been demoted, because he had only one star.
