Does anyone else think Johnny Depp is not as versatile as people state?

sorry but i respectfully disagree....yeah his newer roles [in charlie and the choc factory and alice in wonderland] have tainted my view of his more recent abilities..........i actually think he was [perhaps not as much now] a fine actor who was very versatile .......i think hes cleverly selected roles to suit his abilities [which is what character actors should do]........and think hes provided some memorable roles in films like whats eating gilbert g, cry baby ,dead man , chocolat , benny and joon , ed wood , edward scizzorhands ,etc.....hes had a very interesting career retaining reoccurring [if in somewhat unneccessary sequels] roles for jack sparrow , and doing other films like nick of time ,the astronauts wife , and the ninth gate [one of director roman polanski's fine films]......i think perhaps you havent observed his career in the same way i have and that your view [totally correct when referring to his career in recent years] ...is wrong when you look back on his career pre approx 2004 :)
