My 16yr. old son likes russian history, art, etc. and wants memorabilia.?

He is also fascinated with other countries like Switzerland, he watches history channel all the time and doentarys. I saw a t-shirt on amazon that I thought about getting him for Christmas that is black with the red Russian Star on it. Is is appropriate for him to wear it? I am not educated on the meanings behind Russia's customs and we are not from Russian decent. I do not want to offend anyone. I did buy him a Ushanka with a Russian emblem on it. He does collect things from other countries as well. Someone please enlighten me on this subject. Thanks!
